College Sports and the Recession

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Division III Colleges and Universities naturally have lower expenses than top tier counterparts such as Notre Dame or Maryland, but similar to their Division I brethren, costs are being cut thanks to the economic downturn.

Utica College, for example, has tried to reel-in overnight stays for teams that play back-to-back away games, said Athletic Director Jim Spartano.

Administrators have asked Athletics to trim 3-5% of its budget during the 2009-2010 school year and the department is on-track to reach that mark, Spartano said.

Spartano said there are proposals to reduce men's ice hockey or basketball programs by one game. Spartano didn't specify whether that meant a game reduction for men or women, but said it is just a proposal at this time.

Another proposal being discussed would eliminate printed media guides that have been available to news outlets.
