HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Skinner Auto Group is in the process of going through a complete change at its two Herkimer County dealerships.
Soon the Herkimer dealership will only sell used vehicles, while continuing to service all makes and models.
Owner Roger Skinner said the new business model came about for two reasons - first, to better serve the customers of the Mohawk Valley, and second, to survive in the current economy.
According to Skinner, Herkimer will be home to the new transportation center. All new cars will be moved off the lot and down to the Richfield Springs dealership, leaving the Herkimer dealership to house used cars.
Skinner said the number of used cars will dramatically increase once the move is finalized. The Herkimer dealership will also continue to service all types of vehicles.
Skinner said the goal of the move is to better serve the people of Herkimer County, a move he said was necessary because of the current state of the economy.
"The whole idea is that when a customer wants something, we have to figure out how he wants it instead of of the way we want to sell it," Skinner said. "We want to cater to that customer. If you do not reinvent yourself, you're not going to be around. What I think we need to do is re-invent ourselves and give the public what they need."
Skinner said he hopes he will be fully up and running in a few weeks. That's when he hopes to have the new cars here in Herkimer off the lot and moved to Richfield Springs, making room for more used vehicles.
