Utica College cuts 14 positions in effort to save money

By By MIKE LaFAVE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - 14 staff positions at Utica College will be cut, as the educational institution finds itself fighting through some financial challenges.

The cuts are one method in a series to save a minimum of $1.3 million.

Some of those positions will involve layoffs, while others are vacant positions that will not be filled.

College President, Todd Hutton, would not specify as to which employees were being cut. But did say that they are across the board and each one one carefully scrutinized.

Hutton pointed out that not all vacant positions are being left empty. The current Resident Life Director is leaving for a bigger college. Hutton says there were thoughts of eliminating or consolidating that position with another one. But after much deliberation, it was decided that the position was too demanding and needed to be filled as is.

Hutton says he does not anticipate anymore layoffs.

"We really felt we needed something very clean, very decisive," Hutton said. "It's painful, but it would be a lot more painful if we did five here, five there, over months and months and months. This was designed to get the savings the college needed now and for the future."

That being said, Hutton says more layoffs could come if the state cuts additional college funding.
