After 20 years, Child Care Center at Folts Home closing its doors for good

By HILARY LANE

HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - On August 31, 2012, the Child Care Center at Folts Home in Herkimer will close its doors for good after 20 years in business.

The Folts Home is a senior retirement community, but for many years, the child care program was an important part of the business model and culture at the center.

"The kids are loved at the facility and the residents loved them," said Ralph Reid, CEO of Folts Home.

Due to lack of state funding and stringent requirements from the state, Reid says the Folts Home has been losing thousands of dollars on the child care program over the past few years.

"You have very specific staffing needs and education needs for the staff and that gets very expensive," said Reid.

The eight employees currently working at the Child Care Center will be transferred to different locations throughout the Folts Home.

The Child Care Council at Cornell Cooperative Extension is currently working to find alternative forms of care for the close to 40 kids who will no longer be able to return to Folts Home come September.

If you have questions or are looking for child care, you can call the Child Care Council at (315) 223- 7840 or visit www.mycccc.org
