Post offices to consolidate operations in Central New York

By By PAT BAILEY

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Mail carriers at area post offices will soon be going to work in a different building before heading out on their usual route.

The United States Postal Service has announced consolidation efforts in an attempt to save money. The Postmaster of the New York Mills branch, Colin Hill, says in the fall, carriers on the New York Mills route will report to the Yorkville office before heading out to deliver mail.

"They are doing everything and anything to save money and make things run more efficiently," said Hill.

Similar plans have also been made for post offices in Herkimer County.

Hill says he wants to stress that customers will not notice a change in delivery times, and that the New York Mills branch will still be open for business. In the future, things may be different, Hill added.

Both Yorkville and New York Mills have a Postmaster, however in the future there may only be one, added Hill. The New York Mills Post Office employs seven full and part time people, while the Yorkville office employs five, Hill said.
