Utica Mayor lobbying against ATM fees

By By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After getting more than a few visits from people who are upset about increased ATM charges, Utica's mayor is trying to do something about it.

Mayor David Roefaro has written a letter to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, asking him to investigate ATM fee increases of as much as 12%.

Roefaro said he's received many pleas from Uticans, especially the elderly and immigrants, asking him to do something about the fee increases.

"It really effects the elderly and the immigrants who don't really realize the fees that they're being charged when they use their credit cards or when they use a secondary bank, as they say," Mayor Roefaro said. "And if you want to go get $20 out of your ATM, it can cost you as much as $30."

Roefaro said many seniors have stopped by his office asking for help in lowering ATM fees.
