Community reacts to defeated school merger vote at basketball game

By LEXIE O'CONNOR

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Frankfort-Schuyler and Herkimer fans filled the stands for Friday's women's varsity basketball game with the proposed school merger still on their minds, a night after its straw vote was defeated.

"I was disappointed that it didn't go through, it was just a straw vote so now everything has to stop," says Herkimer resident Gina Pizzo, who has a daughter on Herkimer's JV team and a niece on Frankfort-Schuyler's basketball team.

Despite Frankfort-Schuyler voting down the school merger Thursday night, some Frankfort fans said they felt differently.

"I think they all should've voted yes," says Joe Cacciatore from Frankfort. "There's millions of dollars involved to keep the athletics going and keep the more teachers."

Many students agreed, fearing the programs that might be cut by not merging.

"It's a little disappointing seeing I did this my whole high school career and I'd really want other people to have the opportunities because I know how much fun it is," says Herkimer cheerleader Brooke Rando.

Although a four district merger won't take place for this upcoming school year, many students and parents hope a merger could still be in the future.

"That's how they felt right now, in another year hopefully we can move forward," says Pizzo. "You can't have hard feelings, everyone's entitled to their own opinions."
