Disciplinary charges for MLK Principal in Utica
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New York State Education Department has determined that Martin Luther King School Principal Mark DeSalvo must be moved from his post due to poor academic performance of the school's students.
DeSalvo will continue to work during the disciplinary process, but in the new position of Assistant Principal at Donovan Middle School.
Utica School Board attorney Donald Gerace says that the poor academic performance of the students at the school is only one aspect of the charges. MLK School is in the bottom five percent of schools in terms of academic performance, but Gerace said he could not get into too much detail. He says the incidents occurred over the past two years.
"Student performance is part of the charges that have been charged against Mr. DeSalvo, as well as issues regarding insubordination and issues regarding misconduct," Gerace said.
If DeSalvo requests a hearing before a state officer, possible outcomes could include termination, suspension with conditions such as further training or schooling, or a letter of reprimand.
While DeSalvo becomes Assistant Principal of Donovan Middle School, current Donovan Assistant Principal Becky Nugent will become the Principal of Martin Luther King School.
Utica School Superintendent Bruce Karam could not comment on this story and DeSalvo could not be reached as of this writing.
