Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES receives $300k grant for distance learning

By LEXIE O'CONNOR

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Congressman Richard Hanna joined Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Thursday to announce a $338,716 federal grant for distance learning equipment at BOCES and its 12 school districts.

BOCES says thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, their 12 component school districts could someday share every AP course offered at any of the schools.

"This is about efficiency, about reaching out, about taking what you know and what can teach in one location and transferring it instantly all for free and just reaching out in the community more broadly," Congressman Hanna said.

Currently, the 12 districts offer more than 20 combined AP courses, but most individual districts only have the funding to provide one or two AP courses to their students.

With the grant, school officials hope to pool together more resources, giving their students more opportunities to prepare them for college and a career.

BOCES is scheduled to offer 21 AP courses, 2 foreign languages and 33 enrichment classes thanks to the new equipment starting this fall.
