By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Voters in all three districts involved in the proposed merger eagerly awaited to hear the results from Herkimer. When the four district merger was proposed, Herkimer voters narrowly passed the measure. Wednesday night though, fewer people voted no. Vote results 1160 Yes, 839 No.

The library was filled with poll workers, administration members and people from the merger study committee while the votes were being tallied. the deputy superintendent says you can never tell how a vote with such emotional ties is going to turn out.

"You know the people are emotional. You don't want to get into necessarily a debate. You want to stay on factual information as well as you can and you have to remember that everybody involved in the school , administrators, teachers, everybody has an emotional interest in this."

Officials say all they can do now is hope for the same results after the binding vote, next month. " I think it means that there is going to be a progressive, merged district that is going to offer more opportunities for students in various endeavors and certainly tax payers in two of the districts, Herkimer and Mohawk, will benefit from lower tax rates," said Deputy Superintendent Dick Young. Tax rates in Ilion will remain unchanged.

Young says the next step is for the Board of Education to approve the results.

The binding vote will take place on October 18th.
