Ilion voters vote in support of school merger plan

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - After a record number of votes cast, the proposal to merge four Herkimer County schools has passed in Ilion, but will not go further because of rejection in Frankfort-Schuyler.

In Ilion, the final numbers are 1,221 yes to 755 no.

This is a historic vote for the Ilion school district. Almost 2,000 votes were cast in the merger proposal decision on Thursday. When residents voted for the school budget this past May, only 500 people came out. Workers at the polling place say this is the first time the voting machines have registered over 1,000 votes.

Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra says he is thrilled with the large turnout and is looking towards the future.

"The community said that they would be interested in moving forward so keeping that in mind we will sit down with the boards of education and the other schools that approved this measure and we will see what our next steps will be," says Tangorra.

Tangorra says there is still a chance the Ilion School District could combine with the other two schools interested in merging. But as of now, it's too early to tell.
