Junior Firefighters Camp to heat things up for kids this summer

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - You may have heard of basketball camp, Girl Scout camp, or Summer camp, but now there's a camp designed to get teens motivated about careers as firefighters, and it's happening at Mohawk Valley Community College.

The instructors for the camp will come from department's all over Oneida County and the teens will learn about firefighter safety, how to operate a ladder and participate in hazmat training.

Organizers say there won't be a dull moment, and several students have already signed up.

"It's the younger community that helps out the firefighters and it's going to help me do what I got to do to be in the fire department," said Chris Cardinal of Holland Patent. "I always loved firefighting when I was a little kid - the movies 'Ladder 49,' 'Backdraft.'"

The camp begins on June 25 and only a few dozen students will be accepted.

Part of the application process includes writing a 200 word essay.
