NYT journalist and best-selling author talks true determinations of success
ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - A New York Times journalist and best-selling author was in town on Monday, talking about what really determines success.
Invited by the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Paul Tough spoke to a large group Monday morning at the Jervis Public Library in the City of Rome.
Tough has written two books on the education of children - one titled "whatever it Takes" and his just-released book, "how Children Succeed,"
"We have been focused too narrowly on IQ as the one marker for which kids will succeed and I think that's what's behind our obsession with standardized test scores," Tough said. "And the educators and scientists I've interviewed for this book have identified this different set of skills, such as grit, and perseverance, optimism, and they argue that these have a bigger role to play in which children succeed."
If you missed Paul Tough on Monday morning, you have one more chance to catch him.
He will be speaking Monday night at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica at the Information and Technology Building.
