Parents, students learn more about possible merger in Herkimer County

By HILARY LANE

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - It was Herkimer High School's turn to host an informational hearing, to discuss the possible merger of four Herkimer County Schools on Monday night. The school's auditorium was packed with parents and students interested in learning more about the possible re-organization of Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Ilion, and Mohawk Central Schools.

The details are quite extensive. Each person in attendance was given a 65-page booklet filled with charts, statistics, and explanations of the details involved with the possible merger.

Parents and students all seem to have mixed opinions when it comes to combining the school districts. Jason Bishal is a senior at Herkimer High School and says he does not want to be among the last to graduate from the school. "It would be hard just thinking about it," says Bishal. "The fact that I can't come back here and see the same halls and classrooms because they are just not here or in a different school."

With all four school districts feeling the brunt of state aid cuts over the past few years, merging the Herkimer County schools would mean an estimated $72 Million in incentive aid over the next 14 years for the combined school district. "The way the economy is nowadays you can look to save money and more sports, more opportunities for the kids, more subjects, more languages," says George Jones, a Herkimer resident.

Some of the incentive aid would be used to offer college level courses and foreign language classes if the school districts do combine.

There will be two more informational meetings and then four community discussion meeting where you'll have the opportunity to have your questions answered.
