Herkimer BOCES Superintendent on state test scores

By Statement from Superintendent Mark Vivacqua

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua issued the following statement on state test scores released Wednesday:

"Our teachers and administrators have been working tirelessly to plan and deliver the new world-class curriculum that will build the skills that are measured by these exams. This first measurement is a premature indication of how we are doing, as the work on Common Core Standards has only just begun," Vivacqua said.

"If this is a new baseline, we have a long way to go. I trust our local educators are up to the challenge, but I am also concerned that our low-wealth schools will be hard-pressed to come up with the resources needed to fully deliver on the promise New York state has made to its children. For this reason, I will continue to call for our state leaders in Albany to create an equitable school funding formula. If the Common Core satisfies the promise of a sound basic education, all of New York state's children must have access to quality delivery of that promise, not only those who reside in affluent communities."
