Herkimer Central School District asks for community input on superintendent search

HERKIMER, N.Y. - Herkimer Central School District began its search process this month for a permanent superintendent of schools.

During the Board of Education’s meeting on Nov. 14, the board voted to approve Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES District Superintendent Mark Vivacqua as the search consultant to conduct the superintendent search.

At its Monday, Nov. 26 special meeting, the board agreed to a process and timeline, and is asking for community input during two stages of the district’s search.

The first step is asking residents to complete an online survey to weigh in on the qualifications and experiences they are looking for in a superintendent candidate. The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com and must be completed by Friday, Dec. 21.

District residents will also be invited to volunteer to serve on a committee that will help interview the finalists for the position. More information will be available in the coming months.

It’s anticipated that the field of applicants will be trimmed to two or three finalists by sometime in the middle of February 2013. A new superintendent could be in place as early as May 1, 2013.

Current Herkimer Interim Superintendent Gary Tutty is leaving the district at the end of the calendar year. Tutty was hired following the retirement of Carol Zygo to shepherd the district during the merger study process.

Now that Herkimer voters rejected the three-way merger with Ilion and Mohawk, the district will seek a permanent superintendent.

The Board of Education will be appointing an interim superintendent to start Jan. 1, 2013, until the new superintendent begins with the district.
