Local kids learn to be safe at Fire and Safety Expo

By NEWSChannel 2 Staff

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Roughly 300 kids were given handed the responsibility to keep their families safe this summer after attending a Fire and Safety Expo at Mohawk Valley Community College.

Five schools participated in the event, with the a goal to reinforce what the students learned in October during Fire Prevention Week, including how to handle themselves in a fire or another emergency situation.

While the lesson was fun, it brought with a serious message.

"We bring them here, we put them through a smoke house," said Stan Borek, Co-Chair of the Fire and Safety Expo. "With an alarm sounding, talk to them about stop drop and roll, if their clothes are on fire. We show them equipment and pass water through a hose to a ladder truck from a tanker. We just try to instill in them life saving techniques and lessons."

The event was sponsored by the Oneida County Volunteer Firefighters Association.
