Maple tree planted at Gansevoort Elementary in honor of Arbor Day

By GARY LIBERATORE

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Friday marked Arbor Day, something the first graders at Gansevoort Elementary School in Rome celebrated with a tree of their own.

They and their teacher were presented with a proclamation Friday afternoon by Rome Mayor Joe Fusco in honor of Arbor Day.

The holiday began in 1872 so that people could spend time planting trees to help save the environment. On Friday, the kids watched as a city crew planted a maple tree on the Gansevoort school grounds.

Started by Sterling Morton in Nebraska, it is now celebrated each Spring in numerous countries around the world.
