Miles for Missy honors memory of Herkimer teacher

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - 'Remembering Missy' was the focus Saturday at Herkimer Elementary School where Missy Lasowski used to teach.

The third annual Miles for Missy Run and Walk took place at the school Saturday morning to honor the beloved teacher, softball and basketball coach who passed away from breast cancer three years ago at the age of 30.

Race Director Abbie Sutliff says it is important to keep Missy's memory alive.

"A lot of them knew Missy and they knew her as their teacher because she was a first-grade teacher," Sutliff said. "They're just remembering her in a happy, positive way and doing something that she loved, getting kids out and moving."

Sutliff says she expects roughly $10,000 to be raised once the proceeds are counted.

That total is then divided up and donated to Missy's Foundation for scholarships at Herkimer Elementary School, Mohawk High School and the American Cancer Society.
