HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce Board passed a resolution this week in support of the proposed three-district school consolidation in Herkimer County.

The fourth and final community forum on a proposed three district school consolidation/merger of Ilion, Mohawk and Herkimer School Districts was held in late August 2012. The Advisory Referendum (straw vote) is scheduled for September 12, 2012, followed by a statutory Referendum on October 18, 2012.

"In light of tight budgets and dwindling dollars, the superintendents for those districts have been studying the option of consolidation or merger," the Chamber stated in a press release. "The rising costs of schools is an issue that holds back our region economically and effects business growth."

The resolution was voted upon September 4, 2012.

"The Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce supports such consolidations efforts, applauds the efforts of the three school districts seeking the consolidation of educational services and encourages residents to support the establishment of one school district," the Chamber stated.
