What's next for Ilion-Mohawk School District after Board of Education Election

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - 7 people were elected to the newly merged Ilion-Mohawk Central School District's Board of Education Wednesday night. With deadlines approaching, the team is getting right to work. The new board is scheduled to have their first organizational meeting on Thursday in Mohawk.

"Basically the new board is charged with making all the decisions for the district to be operational by July 1st," said Mark Vivacqua, District Superintendent for Herkimer Fulton Hamilton Otsego BOCES.

Vivacqua says the first order of business for the new board will be the district's new budget. The newly merged district will have to follow the same timeline as other schools in New York State with the board having to adopt the budget by April 25th.

"It's doable, it'll be quick, but it's certainly doable," said Vivacqua. "The budget typically is a reflection of everythings in place in the district, but nothings in place so they are going to have a lot of decisions to make. But the study that was done kind of set the road map for those decisions."

Vivacqua says the new board does not have to follow any plans laid out in the merger study, however based on time and the work that's already gone into that, it will be a good guide.

Superintendent selection was not included in the merger study that will be up to the board.

"Mr. Tangorra has a contract but they don't have to hire him to be the superintendent that's totally up to them they're free to do whatever they'd like to do," said Vivacqua.

Cosimo Tangorra is currently the Ilion Schools Superintendent. Mohawk Schools have an Interim Superintendent, Gene Beirne. Mark Vivacqua is the Ilion-Mohawk Central School District's Acting Superintendent until the new board selects a superintendent.

The Ilion-Mohawk Central School District's new Board of Education is:
- William Lennox of Ilion
- Vicki Judd of Mohawk.
- Stephen Coupe of Ilion
- Fred Schell of Mohawk
- Daniel LaLonde of Ilion
- Matthew Shedd of Ilion
- Walt Roginski of Mohawk

The candidates are listed in order of the number of votes they received. The top three will serve a term of three years, next two board members will serve two year terms, and the following two will each serve a term of one year.

Residents will head back to the polls to vote on the district's budget in May.
