Second meeting to be held regarding proposed Herkimer County School merger

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The second of four meetings regarding the proposed Herkimer County School merger plan gets underway at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

The meeting is the first gathering to talk about the subject since school let out for summer break and will take place at Herkimer High School.

The proposal calls for the merger of Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk School Districts.

Wednesday's meeting will consist of a short presentation bringing the public up to speed on the plan. However, the majority of the time will be allotted for questions and answers from residents in attendance.

"We did our homework and tried to give information on course selections, sports, and these are our recommendations to the new board," said Herkimer Superintendent Gary Tutty. "It will be up to the new board to make the final decision. At least this time, we can give more information on transportation, academic offerings and sports offerings."

If the merger plan passes, Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk schools would become one for the 2013-2014 school year.

There are still two other public forums left after Wednesday night's:

Thursday, August 9 at 6 p.m. - Ilion High School

Wednesday, August 22 at 6 p.m. - Herkimer County Community College

The schools will also be open for tours beginning at 4:30 p.m. on the nights of the forums.
