Students in Oneida experience multiple cultures without ever leaving the classroom

ONEIDA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Elementary school kids in the City of Oneida visited China, Germany and Italy, among other countries on Wednesday - and they did it all without every having to leave their school.

Students at North Broad Elementary School got a lesson in culture on Wednesday, and for the kids, the highlight of the day was eating foods such as pizza, hummus and kielbasa.

Teachers and administrators say that their highlight was watching the youngsters learn that it's okay to be different.

"The thing that I've been so proud of with our kids is, they are so accepting. Some of our kids haven't traveled places," said Principal Bill Simmons. "This is one avenue for them to learn about different cultures and we try to weave it in to the character theme of the month of February."

Another unique aspect of Wednesday's program was that a student became the teacher and a young lady taught her class how to sing a song in Chinese.
