Event Description

Utica native Denise Mathis Hurst, an emerging Singer & Songwriter who is making her mark on the Gospel Music Industry with her debut project: “Unstoppable Dreamer,” will be sharing her music and message with the people of her home town on September 8th, 2012, when she performs in a benefit concert at Mohawk Valley Community College.

The concert, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will be held in the Performing Arts Theater in the IT Building of the MVCC Utica campus.

Tickets are $20 in advance ($10 for children with ID) and $25 at the door ($15 for children). Tickets can be ordered through the MVCC Alumni Office at (315) 792-5340 or Oneida County Workforce Development at 798-5537.

Proceeds of the event will benefit the David Mathis Scholarship Fund at MVCC. The fund helps worthy students address the barriers that could keep them from entering college.

Singing as a young girl in her home church in Utica, Hurst blossomed as a soloist. Her success in music has afforded her the opportunity to sing on both local and national platforms, winnings numerous scholastic and scholarship competitions. Passionate for choral performance, Hurst was featured in all-county and all-state choruses and later went on to co-found the S.P.I.R.I.T. Gospel Chorus at Buffalo State College. She was also the winner of the Utica NAACP ACT-SO Soloist in Classical and Contemporary Music competition.

Hurst is a graduate of Buffalo State College with a masters degree in human service administration. She is the wife of District Elder Germaine D. Hurst and she is the first lady of Greater Emmanuel Temple Church, Inc—“The Church of Champions”—in Buffalo. The Hursts are the proud parents of four sons.

Hurst’s community work inspires and informs her music. She recently launched a new ministry called, KNOWNOW, which promotes health and wellness, and the D.O.V.E.S. (Daughters Of Virtue) mentorship program. She is also the vice-chairlady of F.L.O.W. (First Ladies of Western New York).

This summer, she released her debut EP, Unstoppable Dreamer. This recording contains four songs penned by the artist herself in what she describes as “...a reflection of my soul’s songs”.
