Event Description

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. (Forum on Image and Language in Motion) series will present “The Act of Killing” (2012) from director Josh Oppenheimer.

This chilling, powerful, controversial and award-winning documentary confronts one of the most horrendous crimes of the 20th century: the murder of hundreds of thousands of alleged communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals during the year after Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president and the leader of a national revolution against Dutch colonialism, was deposed by General Suharto. Oppenheimer interviews the men responsible.

The event includes the screening of the film as well as a discussion with Hamilton professors Lawrence Chua, Craig Latrell and Scott MacDonald. It is free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the Hamilton College Asia Forum.
