Art museum soon to open at Hamilton College

By LEXIE O'CONNOR

CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hamilton College is showing that art is accessible with their new Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art. The museum which is just getting its finishing touches before its opening October 6th, is a first for the college, bringing a contemporary look and ideas to the campus.

"The idea is really object based learning,"said Museum Director Tracy Adler. "When you're in a classroom looking at slides projected on a wall it's a very different sense of when you're looking at an object, it gives you a sense of history and a sense of perspective that you don't get other wise."

The museum allows anyone to get up close to the art or even take it out of their 27 foot high archive hall, bring it to one of the seminar rooms to examine or learn about the art in the museum's small lecture hall.

The gallery will host two major exhibitions each year the first, called Affinity Atlas, connecting history to what's going on in the art world now.

"We have a combination of paintings from the 19th century Greek terracottas from thousands of years ago to brand new contemporary work," said Ian Berry, Guest Curator of Affinity Atlas. "Some form London, Brazili, Los Angeles art work from some of the best artists working today."

The Wellin Museum is made possible by a $10 million lead gift from Wendy and Keith Welling, a Hamilton alumnus from the class of 1950 and a retired Wall Street executive. The museum is named for Mr. Wellin's parents.
