Going green on the campus of SUNYIT

By NEWSChannel 2 Staff

SUNYIT unveiled a new alternative energy project on campus Wednesday that was designed, built and run by students.

The Sustainability Path is located between Kunsela and Donovan Halls and demonstrates solar, wind and hydropower technologies.

While it was a great way for students to "Go Green" for their school, it's also a chance for these future engineers to get a better understanding of what they want to do post-graduation and and learn that working as a team gets more done.

"One student from each of the different teams of solar, wind and water hydropower system, we came together as four separate teams and designed our own," said Bianca Little, a Freshman at SUNYIT. "We came together and put all of our ideas together as one whole project."

SUNYIT was also awarded a grant from NYSERDA for energy efficiency, reducing costs by $62,000 a year. That means its buildings are 30 percent above the New York State Energy Code.
