MVCC dedicates fitness center to successful alum

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Mohawk Valley Community College unveiled the new name of their Campus Fitness Center at a special ceremony on Monday.

The fitness center, located in the Robert R. Jorgenson Athletic / Events Center was newly dedicated to a man they say didn't forget his beginnings. The state of the art center is now named the Mike Briggs Fitness Center honoring the MVCC Merit Award winner.

The naming, approved by MVCC's Board of Trustees and the MVCC Foundation Board of Directors, honors what the school calls Briggs' pivotal role in the creation of the Jorgensen Center.

Briggs played Intercollegiate Baseball with Robert R. Jorgensen as his coach and is a longtime supporter of MVCC, bringing in more than $5 million in private sector donations to help make the center the athletic and performance showpiece it is today.

After MVCC, the school says Briggs went on to a successful career in which he rose to the executive ranks of UPS. School officials said Briggs' continued support and dedication towards MVCC makes him the best possible choice for this honor.

"It's a special day," said Gary Broadhurst, Associate Dean of Athletics and Education. "When we dedicated this facility on November 18 for Robert Jorgenson, Mike Briggs was the driving force behind that. This building may still be here without Mike's involvement, but Bob's name may not have been on the building without Mike's interaction. So for him to be here today, to rightfully dedicate a piece of this facility in his name, that's within the walls of Bob Jorgenson's name is a very special day for this college."

Briggs is humbled by the honor and is excited for the benefits the center will bring the MVCC campus.
