Red Cross hosts last blood drive of semester at HCCC

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some of the most reliable blood donors are still sitting in a classroom.

So, on Tuesday, the American Red Cross was at Herkimer County Community College for the last school session before summer break.

Paul Jachim, a donor specialist on-hand for the drive, said that summer is tough and the need is great. However, from September to May, Jachim says that the Red Cross can count on high school and college students to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand.

"I think most of the kids, most of the students at a college like this or a high school, they see the need and want to give back," Jachim said. "They want to come in and help out and give back."

Jachim went on to say that the Red Cross has contracts with local hospitals to provide blood for every day surgeries and procedures - not even counting the emergency situations, such as like car crashes and boating accidents.
