Simulator brings consequences of drinking, texting while driving, to life for college students

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some students at Herkimer County Community College thought they could get behind the wheel of a drinking simulator and be just fine, but were shocked when the learning tool told them they crashed within seconds.

The simulator was on campus on Tuesday, but it wasn't part of a health class, but rather a lesson in psychology. To be more specific, the lesson tied in to a psychology chapter on thinking and making choices.

"We talked about, alcohol is one of the psychological substances," said Lisa Calli, a professor at Herkimer County Community College. "You're gonna see it when you're sad, lonely, when you're partying. It's a big part of, hopefully not college life, but your adult life. This is one of the circumstances you're gonna run into when you're out drinking."

In addition to driving under the influence, the students also learned about the dangers of texting while behind the wheel.
