Students get their hands dirty as they learn about the environment

By HILARY LANE

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District held an Envirothon Wednesday at Herkimer County Community College.

The goal was to teach the 65 high school students in attendance about the importance of protecting the environment. Students rotated between five stations, each one focusing on a different part of nature including aquatics, soil, green infrastructure, conservation and dichotomy.

"The big thing is that you can learn something from the outdoors," said Gerry Smithson, Event Organizer. "You are actually outside playing in the environment, getting your hands dirty and you are outside learning something, just...things that you can't learn in the classroom."

Volunteers from USDA, NYSDEC, and professors from HCCC were all on hand to share their love of the outdoors and educate students.
