Numbers up this year for rabid animals in Oneida County
ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's a potential downside to a mild winter - animals are out foraging for food sooner than normal.
This year, it could be responsible for causing an early spike in the number of rabid animals in Oneida County.
The month of April alone brought four cases of rabid animals to Oneida County, raccoons and a bat. In late May, a rabid fox attacked three people in the Town of Augusta. All three are undergoing rabies exposure treatment, including six shots over a period of four weeks.
The county could be on track for a banner year for rabid animals.
"This is the fifth confirmed case of animal rabies in 2012. To put it in perspective, last year we had a total of eight confirmed cases of rabid animals for 2011. We're not yet halfway through the year," says Ken Fanelli of the Oneida County Health Department.
Tips to keep you and your family safe:
*Keep your pets vaccinated, even house pets. You never know if they come in contact with a rabid mouse or bat that may have entered your home.
*Never touch or feed wild animals, or touch dead or sick animals.
*Walk your pet on a leash, and never leave them in the backyard on a leash unattended If they are attacked by a rabid animal, they're unable to escape.
