St. Elizabeth Medical Center Trauma Center celebrates 25 years

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Trauma Center at St. Elizabeth Medical Center turned 25 years old on Friday, having helped more than 17,000 patients in that time frame.

To work in the Trauma Center, one must be a special kind of person - one who can handle time sensitive, major injuries. It's a difficult and emotional job, but one that is very rewarding.

Work to save a life starts with that first call to 911. After that is when the Trauma Staff takes action.

"It's a team approach," said Filomain Talerico of St. Elizabeth Medical Center. "It's not just one person, or one physician. It starts from the field. The EMS people bring patients in and the people in the Emergency Department, the physicians and the people in the hospital work together. It's a team effort."

The Trauma Center helps an average of 700 patients a year. The St. Elizabeth Trauma Center is modeled after the American College of Surgeons.
