Union healthcare workers gather at Vernon Downs for conference

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - One hundred union healthcare workers gathered at Vernon Downs on Monday for a conference, part of a three-day event to discuss pressing issues in the healthcare field.

On Monday there were workshops on healthcare reform and information technology and students in the healthcare field were invited to take part in the forums, free of charge.

The conference is sponsored by the Healthcare Coordinating Council, which was developed after workers throughout New York and New Jersey realized they were facing the same issues.

"When you start talking and we see that at monthly meetings, my fight in Buffalo is the same fight as Utica's is the same fight in New York City and the same fight in New Jersey and instead of tackling that on our own, we all work together and try to do that," said John Klein, President of the Healthcare Coordinating Council.

The Healthcare Matters conference continues Tuesday with a focus on safe patient handling.
