East Coast Olive Oil company celebrates new facility in Rome

ROME - The Griffiss Business and Technology Park is home to many growing businesses. Now East Coast Olive Oil is one of those businesses, and they're celebrating a big expansion today.

This is really a local success story with a global reach, as East Coast Olive Oil was a small start-up company on Wurz Avenue in Utica back in 1991.

Since then, the company has outgrown that facility and become the largest olive oil importer in the entire United States.

State and local officials were on hand today for the grand opening celebration, as well as the company's partner all the way from Portugal. Production at the new facility is actually already in full swing.

When East Coast was first looking to expand, there was a possibility the company was going to be re-located to another region of the country.

The company's CEO says the decision to stay in Central New York really is a testament to state and local officials, as well as local agencies for their work in keeping and growing business in the Mohawk Valley.

And though this expansion is just being completed, there are already big plans in the works.

"We're pre-approved to double the size of our facility already, so obviously our goal is to increase our business and expand here," said Steve Mandia, CEO of the East Coast Olive Oil company. "We do have enough room here to expand our business and we're going to work very hard to do that."

East Coast Olive Oil sits on almost 23 acres at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park.

The company currently employs more than 150 people at the new facilty.
