Flag raising marks start of Polish American Heritage month

By Dave Dellecese

UTICA - 399 years ago the first Polish settlers made their way to the United States.

Today, Polish Americans in Utica took the time to remember their ancestry for Polish American Heritage month. This is the 26th year for Polish-American Month. The theme this year is "Tracing your Heritage."

They raised Poland's flag high above Hanna Park this morning, as members of various organizations, including several Polish army veterans posts, stood tall and proud during the ceremony.

The goal of this month-long celebration is more than just bringing a group of people together. It's about taking the time to appreciate where you can from.

"We have to remember," said Rich Noga, master of ceremonies. "We can never forget history is what our heritage is and we should always keep that in mind yes we are in America in this great country but we can't forget our origins our roots from where we came."

There are a lot of activities going on throughout the month in honor of Polish Heritage Month. This Sunday they will be laying a wreath at the Pulaski monument on Oneida Street and Memorial Parkway.

Followed by a dinner at the Polish Community Center.

And it doesn't matter if you're Polish - they urge everyone to come out and partake in the events.
