Hinckley Reservoir Working Group discuss future water supply needs

Dave Dellecese

UTICA - Toward the end of the summer the water levels in the Hinckley Reservoir dropped to record lows, resulting in a county-wide water emergency.

On Friday,  area agencies that use Hinckley's water supply met to discuss what needs to be done to avoid that situation. Friday's meeting is one of many for the Hinckley Reservoir Working Group - started by Governor Eliot Spitzer. It's goal is to address future water supply needs - should we face another severe drought.

There are four major players in this working group - the Canal Corporation, the Mohawk Valley Water Authority, the New York Power Authority and the D.E.C. On Friday, each gave a quick presentation of what role they play in drawing water from Hinckley. Then, they spoke about the impact this drought had on their agency. The issues won't be resolved in one day - but Doctor Nancy Kim from the State Health Department says she hopes they will all be discussed.

"My goal is to meet the charge that was given in the Governor's press release so that's my goal," Kim said. "And there may be other issues that arise things that weren't identified data needs that we need along the way that we'll have to identify."

The Working Group must present an initial report to Governor Spitzer by December 17. A final report is due in March 2008.
