Couple collides "head-on" in tragic car accident in Town of Lincoln

TOWN OF LINCOLN - A Canastota woman has been killed after a head-on crash on Nelson Road in the Town of Lincoln early Sunday morning.

Holli L. Read, 38, of Canastota, was driving an SUV northbound on Nelson Road, when her vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck operated by Charles F. Pickard, 41.

Read and Pickard lived together at 3335 Ingalls Corners in Canastota, approximately one mile from the scene of the crash, Sheriffs said.

Deputies believe that Pickard, prior to the crash, was searching for "deer runs" in the area, as he was preparing for the upcoming hunting season. He was not hunting at the time. Deputies believe that Read possibly was driving to the location where Pickard was.

The tragedy of the crash is that neither Read, nor Pickard, a couple together for more than 20 years, had knowledge that the other was on the same road at the same time.

At the scene of the crash where a slight-rise in the road occurred, both vehicles collided head-on. Sheriff's office accident reconstruction efforts have determined that the pickup truck operated by Pickard was in the opposite lane of traffic when the crash occurred.

There is nothing to indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash, not is speed of each vehicle considered to be a factor.

Sheriff Ronald Cary with the Madison County Sheriff's Department said there was "nothing to indicate the event was anything beyond a tragic accident."

The Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office has determined that Holli Read died of multiple trauma.

No charges have been filed and the investigation continues.
