Roefaro looks toward public safety as a top priority

Dave Dellecese

UTICA - Utica's Mayor-elect David Roefaro hardly slept at all last night.

After just three hours of shut-eye, Roefaro was up at 5 a.m. and soon after, having breakfast with the same friends who supported him last night as election results came in.

In spite of that abbreviated night's sleep, David Roefaro was very upbeat today. He was happy, he said, just not having to adhere to a rigid schedule.

Roefaro says a number one priority of his will be public safety, specifically acknowledging and combating the city's emerging drug problem.

Roefaro hasn't announced his transition team yet because he says he has yet to choose them. That will take up most of his time between now and the first of the year, when the reigns of the city officially change hands.

"Probably in a couple of weeks I'm going to start putting together a transition team and I'm going to search out the best people that i think would be very viable for these posts in our city- businesspeople, leaders of the community, youth," Roefaro said.

One person you could say will help in Roefaro's transition - Utica Mayor Timothy Julian. Roefaro says Julian called him last night to congratulate him and offered a hand in making his transition to the mayor's office a smooth one.

Roefaro says he'll probably take Julian up on it.

Roefaro also says it's way too early to talk about what, if any, changes would be made with respect to City Department heads - including one many people are talking about- Public Safety Commissioner.
