DEERFIELD - As gas prices continue to rise, more and more people are looking to alternative sources of energy. One way that has grown in popularity is outdoor wood burning furnaces. But they've also been a source of controversy, which is making its way into the Town of Deerfield.

Ever since the outdoor furnaces were created, they've been praised by energy conservers and criticized by environmentalists. The issue at hand is on Walker Road in the Town of Deerfield.

Clarence Penree said he got the necessary permits from the town to purchase his outdoor wood burning furnace. His neighbors, however, say they are worried about the health risks that will come from the smoke. They say they've done extensive research, and plan to present their findings at a town meeting tonight.

Meanwhile, Penree said he doesn't see why his furnace is such a big issue to his neighbors.

"The neighbors over here burn wood," he said, noting his neighbors. "This is no different than them burning wood."
