Neighbors at war over wood burning furnace (11PM Update)

Dave Dellecese

Residents of one Deerfield neighborhood are concerned about health risks they say may be posed by a wood fired boiler being installed by a homeowner there. Some neighbors on walker road came to the meeting Monday night with a handout on various studies that were conducted on the wood fired boilers. Those studies pointed at health risks that they may pose to people living near them.

The town board also did their research back in 2005 before ever allowing a single boiler to be installed.

There is a local law for the town of Deerfield, enacted in January of 2006, allowing for the use of the alternative-heating source. If used properly the board says it will cause no risk to people in the area and provide homeowners with the option of a cheaper heating system. The town supervisor says there are safe guards in place to ensure they are being used properly.

Now every town does have there own laws regarding wood fired boilers and you should check with your town or city hall and codes department before deciding to purchase one.

As the cost of oil goes up this heating source is becoming more and more popular with homeowners. So this is probably not the last we will hear about these wood fired boilers.
