CLINTON - Teacher, family man, political servant - all words used to describe Ed Bogan as a crowd filled St. Mary's parish in Clinton this morning.
The pews held friends, family, and those who sought his wisdom in the political arena - such as former Congressman Sherwood Boehlert and current County Executive Anthony Picente.
Though the incident of last week that led to Bogan's death was not discussed, Reverend John Croghan referred to the circumstances as "tragic and frightening."
While no specific mention of Bogan's grandson, Kevin Adams - who currently stands charged with Bogan's death - the choice of readings, as well as the homily, all emphasized the importance of family.
Bogan was said to be a man who once you met, made you want to be a part of his family, and was always nice enough to oblige. The Reverend said that in times as tough as losing someone like Ed, family needs to stick together.
Toward the services' end, former Congressman Sherwood Boehlert spoke. It was in 1979 that Boehlert - then newly elected Oneida County Executive - appointed Bogan as Deputy County Executive.
Boehlert, who referred to Bogan as "Mr. Go-To Government," recounted Bogan as a man of intergrity, heart, and soul, crediting the success of Bogan's children to the leadership of Bogan as a father.
Bogan, a teacher for nearly 30 years, was regarded so highly by his students that when Boehlert appointed Bogan as the Deputy County Executive, Bogan's students at New Hartford High School were angry with Boehlert for taking their teacher away, the former congressman recalled.
Boehlert said that Oneida County and the congressional district are the better for Ed Bogan's contributions to it.
And as he began to choke up, fighting back tears, Boehlert said "This is the time for goodbye...we love you. We still do. We always will."
The emphasis on family sticking together was re-enforced not only by their presence at the service, the readings and speeches, but also the Bogan family's desire to have any donations made, in lieu of flowers, to Kevin Adams' defense fund.
Adams is expected to be in New Hartford Town Court Wednesday for a felony hearing in regards to Bogan's death.
