WATERVILLE - Waterville native Corporal John Sigsbee was killed last week in Iraq when his patrol came under enemy fire. Calling hours were held on Thursday for the 21 year old soldier.

Last week we spoke with Corporal Sigsbee's family about how they want people to honor their son. Their's was a simple request - they said they just want people to fly the American flag for the troops - and the Waterville community has responded.

It's a close-knit community grieving the loss of a young soldier killed in combat.

In honor of Corporal John Sigsbee, the flags at his alma mater are flying at half staff. And Thursday night, American flags, big and small, proudly waved throughout Waterville.

"It's wonderful to drive through the village and see all those flags," said Joyce Lemery, a member of the community. "The whole community is affected by it. We just wish the war would get over, and all of our boys would come home and be safe."

And while the flags signify the sacrifice Corporal Sigsbee made for his country, and a mission he believed in, some community members say it's about the bigger picture.

"I think it's one way of honoring everyone," said Holly Loomis. "The ones who are alive, and the ones we've lost.

Calling hours continue at Waterville High School until 8 p.m., and Friday, the funeral will also be there, at 10 a.m.

There will then be a procession to the Saratoga National Cemetery where Corporal Sigsbee will be laid to rest.
