IRS pushes awareness of "Earned Income Tax Credit"

Andrea Bullard

Hundreds of low-income Central New Yorkers are eligible for big tax credits and may not even know it. The IRS is on a nationwide campaign to let working Americans know about the "Earned Income Tax Credit" program.

That push took place in New Hartford Thursday.

The IRS says the "Earned Income-Tax Credit," or EITC, has been around for years, but many who are eligible don't know it. So who is that? It's people who work, but make less than around $40,000.

Thursday, people were at the mall giving people help with filling their taxes and getting their money back. Across the country, there are thousands of community service sites like this providing free tax help, but also programs that teach money management.

All you need to do is bring your ID, Social Security Cards, your W2s and anything that has important tax information on it.

"You're getting the same tax service and we have the IRS supporting every return that goes through," said Danell Libby

"We do the electronic filing so you can get your refund back in 7-10 days," said Mary Beth McEwen. "It's the same service. You're just not paying for it. And you can get financial literacy services. We offer financial literacy services through Cornell Cooperative Extension to allow you to then go forward and use that money wisely."

The program kicked off Thursday but runs until April 15 when taxes are due.

If you couldn't make it to the mall today, there are several other sites in Oneida County that offer this free service. For that information you can follow the link under the "Related Content" section of this story.
