SUNYIT students bringing healthcare to Brazil

MARCY - Bringing health care to the jungle? That's what a group of students and faculty plan to do this March for an Indian tribe in Brazil.

15 student nurses and a handful of faculty members will leave March 5 for a village called Canuma. During the trip, students will provide basic medical care and teach village residents how to provide the same care.

Of all the places in the world to chose, we asked why SUNY picked Brazil.

"The amazon basin region of Brazil is in serious need right now," said Pat Zawko of SUNYIT's Nursing departments. "There is a movement to force the indigenous people out of the amazon region so they get very little services."

This trip was discussed for several years before approved, and Zawko hopes to travel back to Brazil with another group of students again in the coming years.
