Utica School District pulls meatballs after beef recall

Evan White

UTICA - Operations at the Westland-Hallmark meat company were suspended by federal officials after a video surfaced showing workers abusing cattle.

The largest school district in the Mohawk Valley is affected by the recall. The Utica School District began removing meat products after receiving word from the USDA last Wednesday that certain frozen beef could be unsafe for people.

The recall affects products dating back to February, 2006. School lunch progrms, other government programs, and fast food chains received most of the products recalled.

Utica Schools Superintendant Marilyn Skermont says the district took action soon after learning of the recall.

Many of the districts neighboring Utica were unaffected by the recall. Officials for the Utica School District say the problem has been solved.

"They don't have to worry about anything," said Barbara Klein, Utica School Board President. "And it was just one item they don't have to worry about it being served to children."

According to Price Chopper, none of the retail supermarkets in the U.S. received the beef in question.

While the frozen meatballs were removed from Utica schools, officials there couldn't confirm whether some of the supply had been consumed, but didn't have evidence suggesting that it had.

While they would not speak on camera, representatives of Hannaford and Chanatry's supermarkets did tell WKTV that they were not affected by this recall.

School Districts not affected by the recall are:

*Clinton
*Oriskany
*New York Mills
*New Hartford
*Sauquoit
*Waterville
*Mt. Markham
*Westmoreland
*Herkimer
*Frankfort
*Remsen

THANK GOD this is being made aware to the public...Thank God for the Humane Society. This has been an ongoing problem for a very long time and the USDA needs to be exposed for not doing their jobs correctly for all these years. Let's hope the humane society keeps investigating and exposes slaughter houses that process chickens and even worse: pigs. If the USDA doesn't want to do their jobs, let them be exosed. Then maybe they will be forced to.
