Officer Joseph Corr

NEW HARTFORD - Wednesday marks two years since New Hartford Police Officer Joseph Corr was killed in the line duty.

A memorial service will take place at St. John's the Evangelist Church in New Hartford at 6 p.m. and then at 8 p.m., a candlelight tribute will follow at the Byrne Dairy off Route 5 in Kirkland. That's where officer Corr was killed.

Marion Pegues and Robert Ward are held up in New Jersey on charges they robbed a jewelry store there, before the robbery of Lennon's W.B. Wilcox Jewelery in February 2006.

Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara says he is constantly on the phone with the Monmouth County, New Jersey D.A.'s office. Prosecutors there are telling him that the constant, lengthy delays have been at the request of the defendants - Pegeus and Ward - and their attorneys. McNamara fears we will see many more seasons pass before we see these two men in Oneida County to answer for Officer Joseph Corr's death.

"So if they schedule a trial date, probably the earliest we could get these guys back here would be September," McNamara said. "By the time they schedule the trial, have the trial and have them sentenced. Realistically, we're looking way down the road and it gets discouraging."

McNamara feels worse of all for the victims in this case: the people from the jewelry store who were terrorized and didn't think they'd survive that night will have to relive it again - twice if the two men are tried separately. And of course, the Corr family - they're going to have to hear it all again as well.
