Governor Eliot Spitzer has stayed out of sight today. The Associated Press reports two Democratic officials close to Spitzer say that the governor has not yet made a decision about his future. The New York Times had reported early Tuesday afternoon that some
Albany aides indicated that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer may be close to resigning his office in light of his role in a prostitution scandal that broke yesterday. But, as the day went on and Spitzer remained sequestered in his New York City appartment, it became clear that no action on Spitzer's status as governor was imminent.
State Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco (R-Schenectady) says that he spoke with Lt. Gov. David Paterson today and
Paterson reportedly asked Tedisco if the Republicans in the Assembly would give him a fresh start. Tedisco said on an
Albany radio program that he took that conversation as an indication that something was happening regarding the governor’s status.
Lt. Gov. Paterson told the New York Times that he had not heard from Spitzer today. Although several news outlets were reporting that transition talks were underway between
Paterson and Spitzer’s staffs the Lt. Governor told the Times that no one had spoken with him about a resignation or transition.
Meanwhile, Assemblyman Tedisco said that he was considering an action toward impeaching Spitzer if the governor did not resign in the next 48 hours. Tedisco did note that Spitzer would need to be arrested or indicted before impeachment would proceed. Neither has happened yet.
