Paterson NY Governor

Reporter: Evan White (Video)

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democrat David Paterson is officially New York's first black governor after Eliot Spitzer resigns amid a prostitution scandal.

Paterson, who is legally blind, is the state's 55th governor. He succeeds Spitzer, who resigned Monday at noon after being implicated in a
high-priced call girl investigation.

Paterson promises to help the state heal from the scandal that ended Spitzer's 14-month term, much of which was spent in conflict with the Legislature.

The 53-year-old from Harlem was first elected to the state Senate's Democratic minority in 1985 and became minority leader in 2002.
