Utica F.X. Matt Brewing Company "going green"

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -One of Utica's oldest companies has decided to follow a fairly recent trend that has a lot to do with the environment. Utica's F.X. Matt Brewing Company has been undergoing major renovations in its effort to "Go Green."

So, what does going green have to do with beer? The F.X. Matt Brewing Company says...everything.

"We've been doing it for years and a lot of people just started saying they were doing it," said Meghan Frasier, spokesperson for the company.

And right now the company is working on ways to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

"One major thing has been reusing CO2 for carbonation of soft drinks," Fraser said.

The machines that bottle and package beer at the brewery will soon have more energy efficient motors installed.

"We are in the process of researching different ways we can kind of making their be less cardboard on a package ... also less aluminum and glass in our bottles and cans."

Fraser says research will continue into new ways the brew house which was built during World War II can use the resources to make beer in more efficient ways.

Officials say other breweries outside of the area have already begun using solar technology in the brewing process - something they are looking into which may be a major part of the brewery's future in the coming years.
